South Korea faces South Africa in final group match – elimination looms for both teams

There is also a lot at stake for South Africa. The return to the World Cup stage after the home World Cup 16 years ago threatens to end with a fourth group-stage elimination. After the disappointing dress rehearsal before the tournament – very disappointing against Mexicans who were also not brilliant – South Africa then picked up its first point with a 1:1 draw against the Czech Republic.

In Monterrey, South Africa and South Korea face each other at 3 AM CEST. South Africa, with one point from two matches, is under pressure and needs a win against South Korea to keep its chances of reaching the round of 16 alive. For South Korea, a draw would suffice, provided Mexico does not lose to the Czech Republic – unless Mexico loses to the Czech Republic and South Korea loses to South Africa.

What is at stake

The situation in the group is therefore wide open. Mexico leads the table after the 1:0 against South Korea, followed by South Korea with three points, ahead of the Czech Republic and South Africa, who each have one point. A win could even see South Africa finish second in the group, but if the team fails, elimination would be sealed.
