A 22-year-old firefighter lost his life while battling a blaze in the southeastern department of Savoie, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced on Wednesday.

According to French media reports, the firefighter was fatally struck by a falling rock during the operation in the commune of Planay. The fire had been triggered by a lightning strike, intensified over the weekend due to strong winds, and spread to 30 hectares by Tuesday evening.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez paid tribute to the deceased with an emotional statement. "Die Nation verneigt sich vor seinem Andenken und teilt den Schmerz mit all denjenigen, die ihn gekannt und an seiner Seite gedient haben", the minister said according to the release.

The fire is part of a wave of forest blazes currently affecting large parts of France. In the south of the country, near Perpignan in the Pyrenees, additional fires are raging, further fueled by the ongoing heatwave.
