Multiple forest fires kept firefighters busy on Wednesday in southern France and forced around 600 people to evacuate their homes, as an ongoing heat wave and strong winds hamper extinguishing efforts.
Situation near Narbonne worst
Already on Tuesday afternoon, the fires spread rapidly across several départements around Marseille and in the hinterland of Narbonne. Firefighters have since been deployed with reinforced forces. The region north of Narbonne is particularly affected, where, according to emergency services, around 900 hectares of vegetation have already burned. The fire had still not been brought under control by the morning.
Near Lançon-Provence, located between Marseille and Avignon, the flames also tore through around 260 hectares of forest and scrubland. Around 600 residents had to leave their homes, the prefecture announced. As of now, no one was injured.
