A 25-year-old mother was sentenced on Thursday in Villach for drug dealing to a two-year prison term, while her infant slept in the next room of the household.

Investigations Through Intercepted Phone Conversations

As the "Krone" reported, Carinthian narcotics investigators uncovered the case through intercepted phone conversations. The young woman had used her maternity leave to handle illegal drug transactions. Her child slept in the same household during the deals.

The presiding judge, Claudia Bandion-Ortner, pressed from the bench to understand how this downward spiral could have happened. The defendant explained her actions simply with her feelings: "Ich war verliebt". The 40-year-old co-defendant, a man from Algeria without a residence permit in Austria, is said to have regularly transported the goods by train from Vienna to Villach.
