The Klagenfurt Public Prosecutor's Office took over the further investigations in the case, according to police. Among other things, it is being examined how the suspect came into possession of the drug and whether there is a connection to a nationwide trafficking network.

The designation as a "drug find" is the standard police categorization for such incidents. Officers from the responsible criminal investigation unit secured evidence at the vehicle and the man's personal belongings, according to their own statements.

Prior to the arrest, there had been no indications regarding the 74-year-old. The man had not previously come to the attention of officers as a criminal offender, according to investigation sources. It was only the check that substantiated the suspicion.

Legal Consequences

Police pointed out in their statement that traffic checks are a central instrument in the fight against drug crime. Even if not every check leads to a find, substances are regularly seized and perpetrators apprehended in this way.

The suspect did not initially comment on the charges following his arrest. A lawyer was provided to him on the day of his arrest, according to police. Whether the man will make a confession or exercise his right to remain silent initially remained open.

Klagenfurt prison is a regular correctional facility and serves, among other things, to house remand prisoners. The duration of detention and possible conditions in the specific case are decided by the responsible investigating judge.

The Spittal an der Drau district administration has taken note of the case. Possible further administrative steps, such as the revocation of the driver's license, will only be decided after the conclusion of the criminal proceedings, it was said.

The Public Prosecutor's Office announced that it would review the case promptly. Should the suspicion against the 74-year-old be substantiated, an indictment for drug trafficking comes into consideration. In Austria, the Narcotic Substances Act provides for severe prison sentences for trafficking cocaine.
