Salzburg, 01 July 2026

A 70-year-old man was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison at the Salzburg Regional Court on Wednesday after stabbing his ex-partner three times with a 20-centimetre knife.

The court heard that the defendant had been asked by his ex-partner to contribute €200 per month for accommodation, a request prosecutors said pushed him to what he described as the breaking point. According to testimony, the man told his son in January 2026 that he was at the end of his tether because of the demand. The ex-partner had agreed to let him sleep on an emergency bed in her son's apartment, but only until he found something else.

The defendant had moved back into the family home shortly before Christmas 2025 after he became homeless and had no registered address. He had originally offered to help with renovation work when his ex-partner and her son bought the house together in 2013. What was planned as a three-month stay, the court heard, turned into several years, until he moved out at his ex-partner's request in 2022.
