A 74-year-old man died on Thursday after a swimming accident in the Traisen river near Traismauer in the district of St. Pölten, Lower Austria, police said.
The man, described as a local resident, was swimming alone in the Traisen when the incident occurred in Oberndorf am Gebirge, a cadastral community of Traismauer. Police were alerted to the river at around 17:00 on Thursday afternoon, according to the Polizeiinspektion Herzogenburg.
Witnesses told investigators that the 74-year-old had gone into the water by himself. After the alarm was raised, emergency services, including the rescue helicopter "Christophorus 2," were dispatched to the scene.
