Fatal swimming accident: 87-year-old dies in the Mühlwasser in Vienna

Rescue teams, firefighters and police subsequently deployed to the Mühlwasser. Divers from the Vienna Professional Fire Brigade began searching for the missing man. A helicopter was also incorporated into the operation, according to police, to search the area from the air.

After a search lasting several hours, the 87-year-old was ultimately recovered from the water, already deceased. The Vienna Police confirmed the find to APA. There were no initial indications of foul play; investigations into the exact cause of death were initiated.

The Mühlwasser is a body of water popular with swimmers on the outskirts of Vienna that has repeatedly been the scene of swimming accidents in recent years. The City of Vienna regularly points out in its bathing information that currents and water depth in the area of the Mühlwasser are underestimated.

Mühlwasser as an accident hotspot

Local residents had repeatedly demanded in the past that safety precautions at the Mühlwasser be reinforced, for example through additional warning signs, bathing bans at dangerous spots, or better supervision by the Vienna Professional Fire Brigade. It has previously been pointed out that the body of water is classified as an open bathing area and is not continuously monitored by lifeguards.

In Lower Austria as well, where the Mühlwasser borders the Vienna city area in some places, operations related to swimmers getting into difficulty occur time and again, according to police. Following the accident, the Vienna emergency services once again emphasised the dangers that the body of water can pose even for experienced swimmers.

Investigations and next steps

The Vienna Police continued their inquiries on Friday evening. The authorities initially provided no information on the victim's citizenship or on the exact length of time he had spent in the water. An autopsy of the body was ordered to determine the precise cause of death.

The man's identity was confirmed by police, and next of kin were notified. There was no confirmed information at the time of reporting regarding any pre-existing health conditions that may have contributed to the accident.

Following the operation, the Vienna Professional Fire Brigade appealed to swimmers in the Mühlwasser never to overestimate their own abilities and to heed official guidance. In the coming days, police will increase their presence in the area of the waterway.
