Around 8,000 tadpoles that hatched from moor frog spawn at the Tiergarten Schönbrunn have been relocated to two renaturalized ponds in Carinthia in order to strengthen the local population of the moor frog, which is endangered in Austria.

The Tiergarten Schönbrunn announced on Thursday in a press release that the eggs, which had been brought from Carinthia to Vienna in spring with the required permits, returned to their homeland after about ten weeks of rearing. "As soon as the tadpoles grew their hind legs, it was time to return to Carinthia," the zoo said. In Vienna, the animals had been reared under "optimal conditions," whereas in their Carinthian homeland a different fate awaited them.
