Bad Segeberg, 28 May 2026
Officials broke ground on a long-delayed section of the A20 motorway near Bad Segeberg on Thursday, ending a 17-year standstill caused by legal challenges and environmental concerns.
A Long Road to Resumption
The ceremony marked the start of work on Section 3, a 10-kilometer stretch between Weede and Wittenborn that will loop south of Bad Segeberg. Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder, Schleswig-Holstein Minister President Daniel Günther, State Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen, and Autobahn GmbH chief Michael Güntner attended the event.
The new bypass is designed to divert traffic away from the B206, a federal road that cuts through the center of Bad Segeberg and carries around 33,000 vehicles daily, including roughly 3,000 trucks. Projections suggest the A20 will reduce that number to about 13,600 vehicles per day.
