Hildesheim, July 10, 2026

Researchers have found evidence in the Diocese of Hildesheim of 84 previously unknown suspected perpetrators of sexual violence since the year 1945, according to interim results of a reappraisal study presented on Thursday evening.

Numbers and Background of the Study

Together with the 64 already known suspects from two previous studies, there are now a total of 148 suspected perpetrators in the Diocese of Hildesheim, it was said at an information event in the Lower Saxon city. According to the commissioned researchers, evidence of 84 suspected perpetrators since 1945 has so far been found in the diocesan archive, who were not discovered in previous investigations. The experts assume that there are significantly more than the roughly 150 known victims to date. It is unclear how many victims are behind the individual cases.
