The Administrative Court of Justice (VwGH) on Tuesday rejected an appeal against the EIA requirement for the controversial Heumarkt high-rise project in Vienna, while in Busan the UNESCO World Heritage Committee is deliberating on the continued inclusion of Vienna's historic center on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
As reported simultaneously from Vienna and Busan, the Administrative Court of Justice rejected the application by the project developers to overturn the decision of the Federal Administrative Court (BVwG). This means that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project at Heumarkt remains in force. Christian Schuhböck of the environmental organization Alliance For Nature welcomed the decision: „Der Verwaltungsgerichtshof hat in seinen Entscheidungen ausdrücklich bestätigt, dass negative visuelle Auswirkungen des Projekts Heumarkt auf eine Reihe wichtiger Blickpunkte des Welterbes in Wien zur UVP-Pflicht des Projekts führen, dies sogar unabhängig davon, ob die Aberkennung des Welterbestatus droht oder nicht“.
