Gibraltar, 15 July 2026

Since midnight, all border controls at the land border between Spain and Gibraltar have been abolished, after an agreement concluded in February between the European Union and the United Kingdom entered into force on this day.

With the removal of controls, people and goods can now pass through the land crossing between the EU country of Spain and the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar without the previous checks. Passport controls will only be carried out at Gibraltar's airport and port. The dismantling of the symbolic, approximately one-kilometer-long metal fence erected in 1908 is to begin this week.

Reactions from Madrid and London

Spain's Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares described the lifting of border controls as "historic." For the first time in three centuries, both sides would "extend their hands to each other," Albares declared with reference to the British conquest of Gibraltar in 1704. The minister from the left-wing government spoke of a turning point in relations between Madrid and London.
