Following Norway's defeat in the World Cup quarterfinal against England, at least 45 people were treated overnight in the emergency room of Oslo's Accident Hospital after up to 135,000 fans had gathered in the city center.
The deputy head of the emergency room, Martine Enger, told the newspaper "Aftenposten" that between midnight and 7:00 a.m., 45 people sought medical help. According to the clinic, the injuries and complaints were related to the fan festival for the Norwegian team's quarterfinal match. Earlier German media reports had also spoken of at least 24 those affected; the Norwegian authority cited the higher figure of 45.
According to the news agency NTB, up to 135,000 people gathered in the center of the capital to watch the Norwegians' match against England. The newspaper "Verdens Gang" (VG) reported that after the final whistle alone, around 20,000 fans remained in front of the Royal Palace. Footage from the broadcaster TV2 showed huge, euphoric crowds in front of the Royal Palace in Oslo, including numerous supporters who performed the Norwegian rowing gesture together.
