Jens Spahn resigned on Saturday as chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group after criticism arose over his fatherhood of a child via a surrogate mother from the USA.
After the birth of his son through a surrogate from the USA became public, the pressure on Jens Spahn had grown massively in recent days. On Saturday, he informed Chancellor Friedrich Merz that he would resign from his office as chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.
Merz confirmed the step the same day via the platform X. In a tweet at 1:31 p.m., he stated: "Jens Spahn hat mir mitgeteilt, dass er von seinem Amt als Vorsitzender der CDU/CSU-Bundestagsfraktion zurücktritt. Die Entscheidung ist richtig und war unvermeidlich. Glaubwürdigkeit ist in der Politik das höchste Gut".
