Following the resignation of Union parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn (CDU), Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz wants to swiftly clarify the succession and announced talks with CSU chief Markus Söder for the coming days.

In the ZDF summer interview on Sunday, Merz explained that the Union parliamentary group was capable of working if necessary, but a proposal for the succession should come "relatively soon". At the same time, he pointed to the parliamentary summer break, during which the parliamentary groups would have no sessions until early September.
