Bremen, July 9, 2026
Austrian national goalkeeper Alexander Schlager is set for a free transfer from FC Red Bull Salzburg to German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen, according to information from the "Salzburger Nachrichten" and "Deichstube."
The move to the Weser would take the 30-year-old into a league where he hopes for new impulses following convincing performances at the World Cup. Werder Bremen is looking for a new number one following the departure of previous first-choice goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, who moved to SC Freiburg in the summer for around 15 million euros. With the Estonian Karl Hein, signed from FC Arsenal, the Bremen side do have a designated successor, but the decision-makers are evidently additionally convinced by Schlager.
According to the "Salzburger Nachrichten" and "Deichstube," the Hanseaten already have concrete plans for the goalkeeper from the Mozart city. The Northern Germans are said to pay around three million euros in transfer fee. At the same time, the "Deichstube" considers it possible that the transfer could go through on a free transfer despite one year remaining on his contract. The background is that Schlager is pushing for a change in Salzburg anyway.
Schlager is tied to Salzburg until summer 2027 and, according to the available reports, is himself pushing for a move. The "Salzburger Nachrichten" and "Deichstube" write in agreement that the goalkeeper is on his way to the Weser. The Salzburg native, who moved from LASK to FC Red Bull Salzburg in 2023, has since made 113 competitive appearances for the "Bullen," including ten matches in the Champions League.
