After the Death of Lindsey Graham: His Sister Darline Nordone Temporarily Joins the US Senate

The 62-year-old is politically an unknown quantity; she has previously appeared in public only as a supporter of her brother. As the "Washington Post" reported, Nordone has no political past and little is publicly known about her own political views.

Background: An Unusual Succession

According to Fox News, Nordone brings more than 28 years of professional experience in leadership positions for the state of South Carolina. She currently works as a commissioner of a disabilities agency and is therefore familiar with administrative tasks.

The relationship between the siblings was always close. Shortly before her twelfth birthday, their mother died of cancer in 1976; around 15 months later, their father also succumbed to a heart attack. At the time, Graham was 13 years old, her brother Lindsey was in his early twenties at the beginning of his law studies and took on responsibility for the family.

The "New York Times" quoted her in 2015 as saying: "Er ist so etwas wie Bruder, Vater und Mutter in einer Person". In the same year, she told US radio station NPR: "Lindsey nahm mich in den Arm und versprach mir, dass er immer für mich da sein und sich immer um mich kümmern würde".

Political Majorities Under Pressure

The interim solution is politically necessary because the balance of power in the Senate has shifted with Graham's death. The Republicans actually hold 53 of the 100 Senate seats, meaning that only 52 are currently participating in votes. With Nordone as successor, the Republicans' seat count is preserved for the time being.

At the same time, the party's room for maneuver is limited because 60 votes are required for many decisions before a vote can even take place. Republicans therefore remain dependent on votes from the ranks of the Democrats for important initiatives.

According to Bloomberg, the House of Representatives currently has 218 Republicans and 215 Democrats. Several medical emergencies among members have also occurred there recently, once again raising the question of the Congress's ability to function.

Age and Term of Office: A Nationwide Debate

Graham's sudden death from a ruptured aorta is just one of several medical emergencies with consequences for US politics. Over the past two decades, there have been almost 40 in-office deaths among the 100 senators and 435 representatives in the House of Representatives.

The average age in the Senate is just under 65, and in the House of Representatives it is 58 – the median among all employees in the US is 42. The oldest serving senator is the 84-year-old chairman of the Appropriations Committee, who has already announced that he will not run for the Senate again.

Debate over Term Limits

In surveys, an overwhelming majority of around 80 percent of Americans, across all party preferences, express support for age limits and for a maximum number of terms in office. The Graham case is reigniting this debate.

South Carolina Republicans have scheduled primaries for November 11 to determine a candidate for the succession. Should no one secure an absolute majority in the first round, a second primary will be held on November 25.

Outlook: Special Elections in November

All voters in the state will then decide on the Senate seat on November 3 in the midterm elections. The term of the deceased senator ends in January 2027, and Darline Graham Nordone will take over until then – for several months.

In domestic policy terms, Graham was most recently considered a close ally of President Trump. During the 2016 primaries and after the storming of the Capitol in 2021, however, he had still clearly criticized Trump. This political shift significantly shaped Graham's public image in recent years.

Nordone's swearing-in is an unusual event in the United States, as direct family replacements rarely occur. As a rule, governors appoint an acting successor from the deceased's political circle until a formal special election is organized.

With the change in the Senate, the balance of power is also shifting in several committees of which Graham was a member. The filling of these posts is likely to be negotiated within the party in the coming weeks, so as not to jeopardize the chamber's ability to act.
