Washington, July 14, 2026

Following the surprising death of Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham, his sister Darline Graham Nordone was sworn in as his successor in Washington on Tuesday, temporarily taking over the seat for the state of South Carolina until the end of the current legislative period in January 2027.

Lindsey Graham died over the weekend at the age of 71 from the consequences of a ruptured aorta. His death came as a political surprise and prompted condolences across party lines. A successor therefore had to be arranged at short notice.

The Governor of South Carolina subsequently appointed Graham's sister Darline Graham Nordone as acting successor. US President Donald Trump had previously proposed this solution and spoke of a "fabulous tribute" to Graham.
