The Austrian government and the Greens have reached an agreement after intensive negotiations on a faster expansion of renewable energies, with the expansion targets for 2030 and 2035 being raised and the approval procedures simplified.

The coalition government and the opposition Greens reached an agreement on Thursday on the expansion of renewable energies. This ended a political conflict in which the Greens had initially blocked the law because they demanded higher expansion targets. In return for the Greens' approval, the target benchmarks for the expansion of wind, solar, and hydropower as well as battery storage will be raised.

As the parties announced on Thursday, the 2030 expansion target will be increased by 3 terawatt hours (TWh) to now 30 TWh. For 2035, the agreement aims for at least 40 TWh. In contrast to the previous version of the law, the compromise provides for binding requirements for the federal states, which are to be defined within a maximum of three years.
