Wiener Neudorf, 29 May 2026

Austria’s first swarm storage facility, a network of jointly operated batteries with a total capacity of 2.2 megawatt-hours, is being built in Wiener Neudorf, officials announced during a site visit on Thursday.

The project marks a new phase in the country’s energy transition, moving beyond individual home storage systems toward coordinated, regional storage solutions. A swarm storage unit functions as more than the sum of its individual batteries, pooling locally generated surplus solar power to relieve pressure on electricity grids and stabilize prices.

Lower Austria’s Deputy Governor Stephan Pernkopf and Chairman Rudolf Schütz visited the construction site, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach. “Only when we create a balance between the expansion of renewables, grid expansion, and available storage capacity will the energy transition be a success — and in the end we can save several billion euros per year that would otherwise flow abroad for diesel, petrol, heating oil and gas,” Pernkopf said.
