The Vienna Chamber of Labor (AK) carried out a spot check in tourist-heavy districts of Vienna to investigate how many hospitality businesses offer tap water free of charge – and the results are sobering.

Spot Check in Tourist Districts

Out of 30 inspected Viennese restaurants, only three serve tap water at no extra charge. In 23 establishments, a fee is charged even when guests also order food or other drinks. This is according to a survey by the Vienna Chamber of Labor, published on Wednesday.

In one particularly striking case, one restaurant charged 3.60 euros for a half-liter of tap water, according to the AK. Consumer advocates see this as an example of a practice that, in their view, is hardly compatible with the standards of fair business practice in the hospitality industry. The survey was conducted in districts of the federal capital characterized by tourism, according to the AK.
