Vienna Braces for Another Wave of Price Hikes as Waste, Water, and Sewer Fees Set to Rise in 2027

According to the "Kurier" newspaper, the red-pink city government is likely to announce the increase in August, when the statistics authority sets the final inflation figure. The calculation is straightforward: since the last adjustment of municipal tariffs on January 1, 2025, the consumer price index (CPI) had risen by 4.4 percent by April 2026.

This already exceeds the three-percent threshold that triggers an automatic increase under Vienna's Valorisation Act. The annual cut-off date for the law is June 30, meaning the final figure could be even higher.

Political Reactions and Fiscal Reality

The office of Finance Councillor Barbara Novak (SPÖ) argued along these lines when asked by the Kurier: "We are currently at the beginning of budget preparation for the year 2027. The goal is to gradually reduce the deficit and new debt without weakening Vienna in its role as Austria's economic engine and without endangering necessary investments in key future areas."

Neos economic spokesperson Markus Ornig was more reserved, stating: "The budget negotiations are currently ongoing internally; we will not pre-empt these discussions."

Inside the city hall, there is reportedly no doubt that the automatic fee increase will actually be implemented next year. With around 15 billion euros in debt and a precarious financial situation, these municipal revenues are considered indispensable, especially as they can be framed as necessary investments in infrastructure.

The Valorisation Act, introduced in 2007, has never been triggered as often as under the current red-pink coalition. Thanks to the post-Corona period and the inflation crisis, the fee screw will soon be turned for the fourth time this decade: municipal fees rose by 5.2 percent in 2022, and by 5.9 percent in both 2023 and 2025.

A Decade of Repeated Hikes

The last increase was announced in August 2024 by then-Finance Councillor Peter Hanke (SPÖ), who declared an adjustment of 5.9 percent. The current financial planning already points to the next hike at the start of the 2027 budget negotiations.

To put the costs into perspective, a 120-liter waste bin emptied once a week currently costs 288.97 euros per year. One hundred cubic meters of water, including the meter, costs 257.38 euros, while the same amount of wastewater incurs a sewer fee of 236 euros.

A similar automatic mechanism for parking fees is in a tight race to reach its own threshold. Since the last increase only a few months ago, the change rate of 2.4 percent means the price for a 30-minute ticket, currently 1.70 euros, has only risen by 4 cents, not yet enough to trigger a 5-cent step increase.
