Russian ice hockey superstar Alexander Ovechkin has announced that he will play another season for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League.

Decision on Thursday

The 40-year-old made the decision public in a statement on Thursday. „Ich liebe es, Eishockey zu spielen und um Siege zu kämpfen“, he said about his decision to continue. Ovechkin has been playing for the Capitals since 2005, making him the longest-serving member of the current roster.

Ovechkin holds the NHL regular-season goal record with 929 goals in 1,573 games. He established this benchmark over many years. Including playoff goals, he has already surpassed the 1,000-goal mark according to available statistics.

In 2018, Ovechkin led the Washington Capitals to the first and so far only Stanley Cup in franchise history. The forward, who turns 41 in September, was born in Russia and is considered one of the defining figures of the modern NHL.
