Carolina Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup for the second time

Goaltender Brandon Bussi turned away all other chances. The netminder was a reliable backbone and kept his team in the game, especially during the critical phases. Vegas rarely found dangerous scoring opportunities against the Hurricanes' compact defense.

Decisive Moments

Jackson Blake made it 2-0 in the second period. In the 34th minute, Blake capitalized on a chance and extended the lead. For Vegas, the task became increasingly difficult, particularly as Carolina defended the lead with great discipline thereafter.

A symbolic moment came with a shot off the crossbar by Jack Eichel nine and a half minutes from the end, when he failed to convert from short range with no opponent in front of him. The Vegas forward's shot hit the crossbar and remained the hosts' most dangerous moment of the final phase.

With 68 seconds remaining, Nikolaj Ehlers scored to make it 3-0 as the Golden Knights had pulled their goaltender in a bid to force a goal. Ehlers took advantage of the empty net and sealed the final score, recorded as an empty-net goal in the 59th minute.

Brind'Amour as Coach

Coach Rod Brind'Amour was the team's captain when Carolina won the first Stanley Cup in franchise history in 2006. Twenty years later, he is responsible for the second title, bringing the story full circle from former player to current head coach.

The Hurricanes had finished the regular season as the top team in the Eastern Conference and were therefore considered one of the top favorites for the title. They lived up to that role during the season and in the playoffs, defeating the 2022/23 champion in the Final series.

Golden Knights Again Without a Title

For the Golden Knights, who are only playing their ninth NHL season, dreams were dashed for the second time in their third Stanley Cup Final appearance. Their lone title remains the one from the 2022/23 season. Vegas had played the decisive game at home in Las Vegas but was unable to take advantage of home ice.

The Hurricanes' first championship came in 2006, also under the leadership of Brind'Amour as captain. The repeat triumph 20 years later now makes Carolina the youngest double-champion franchise in NHL history in terms of the time span between title wins.

The Stanley Cup is the most storied trophy in hockey and has been awarded to the NHL champion since the end of the 19th century. With their second title, Carolina joins a list that has recently been dominated primarily by traditional Canadian and U.S. clubs.
