The Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV) and affiliated alpine clubs launched a joint awareness campaign on Tuesday on the topic of bedbugs in mountain huts.
The initiative is aimed at hut operators, ski tourers and ski tourers, and volunteer trail officers. It bundles information on the detection, prevention, and control of bedbugs in alpine accommodations. The Austrian Alpine Club is coordinating the campaign together with partner clubs from Germany and South Tyrol.
The background is experience from the current season. According to the available suspected case reports, the Austrian Alpine Club received five suspected bedbug reports from the huts in 2025. The clubs emphasize that even isolated cases can trigger considerable logistical and financial effort. According to them, an infested hut must be inspected immediately, partially cleared, and professionally treated.

Carolin Scharfenstein from the Huts and Trails Department at the Austrian Alpine Club explained the goal of the campaign: "Wegschauen ist beim Thema Bettwanzen keine Lösung". She pointed out that prevention, clear reporting channels, and open communication with guests are central building blocks in containing the spread.
Another concern of the campaign is to destigmatize the issue. Bedbugs are considered unpleasant, but according to the ÖAV they are not a sign of poor hygiene; rather, they are primarily spread through travel luggage and contaminated objects. The clubs want to dispel myths and give hut operators a factual guide.
