Salzwedel, 30 June 2026
Eleven mayors and five rural districts from Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony have called in a joint letter to the Federal Ministry of Transport, Deutsche Bahn, and the relevant state ministries for a permanent long-distance rail connection between Hamburg and Berlin with stops in the Altmark.
The initiative, led by Salzwedel Mayor Olaf Meining (independent) and ten other mayors, is directed at federal policymakers and the rail operator. The core demand is that the route between Hamburg and Berlin should in future permanently run via Lüneburg, Uelzen, Salzwedel, and Stendal, with regular stops there.
