The Eisenbahn- und Verkehrsgewerkschaft (EVG) is warning that the planned entry of Italian long-distance rail provider Italo into Germany could disconnect at least 16 cities from the ICE and IC network.
According to an analysis by the union, quoted by "Bild am Sonntag", the stations of Aachen, Augsburg, Bamberg, Chemnitz, Cottbus, Freiburg, Ingolstadt, Jena, Magdeburg, Münster, Norddeich Mole, Osnabrück, Rostock, Saarbrücken, Schwerin and Singen would be particularly affected. In Trier, a planned IC connection would be dropped, according to the analysis. This would mean longer travel times and transfers to slower regional trains, the union analysis states.
EVG chief Martin Burkert warns: "Wenn Italo hier Rosinenpickerei betreiben darf und die Bahn von den Hauptstrecken verdrängt wird, zerlegt das unseren Fernverkehr." Italo wants to enter the German market from 2028 with 30 trains, including on the highly profitable Munich–Dortmund and Munich–Hamburg routes. If Deutsche Bahn loses these lines, it will be less able to cross-subsidize long-distance services in the regions, Burkert told the paper.
