Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met US President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington on Tuesday to discuss a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
The meeting took place as the ten-day ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump had taken effect at midnight on April 16, 2026. According to both sides, the aim of the talks is a permanent and sustainable ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.
As the White House announced, the current conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon was addressed during the talks. It was the first visit by a Lebanese head of state to the White House since 2009.
Rubio's praise for the Lebanese government
On Sunday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had commended the Lebanese government's efforts toward a peace agreement with Israel. He had praised Lebanon for its "determined efforts to regain the sovereignty of the country, to disarm Hezbollah, to dismantle its terrorist infrastructure and to set the course toward peace" with Israel. This statement was issued by the US State Department following a meeting between Rubio and Aoun in Washington.
