Beirut, July 10, 2026
The United States wants to coordinate the gradual withdrawal of Israel from a buffer zone in southern Lebanon with a military delegation in Beirut and to establish an initial pilot zone there, as Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced on Thursday.
Background of the agreement
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated on Thursday that the US Ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa, had informed him that "in the coming days a US military delegation will arrive in Beirut to define the procedure for implementation on the ground." An initial "pilot zone" is to be set up within a few days, according to a US government official. US Central Command (Centcom), responsible for the region, will coordinate with both countries, as stated from Washington: "Weitere Pilotzonen befinden sich derzeit in der Planungs- und Ausarbeitungsphase."
