The Israeli military announced on Saturday that it has expanded its ground operation in southern Lebanon, crossing the Litani River and calling for the evacuation of seven villages, despite a ceasefire with Hezbollah that has been in effect since April 17.
Israeli forces have moved into 'additional areas' in southern Lebanon, the army stated, beginning an operation 'a few days ago' near the Beaufort ridge and Wadi al-Saluki. The military reported the capture of Beaufort Castle, a strategic position on the Litani River, roughly 30 kilometers north of the Israeli border.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Friday that Israeli units had crossed the Litani River. The stated objective, according to the military, is to eliminate 'direct threats' to northern Israeli communities, including the town of Metula, and to strengthen what it calls a 'forward defensive line' — in German, a 'vorgeschobenen Verteidigungslinie.'
