Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with US President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington on Tuesday, aiming to push the US administration to apply greater pressure on Israel.
Background of the Meeting
The visit marks a diplomatic push amid a fragile phase between the warring parties in the Middle East. Aoun's stated goal, according to the starting position, is to get Trump to exert more pressure on Israel — particularly with regard to the ongoing troop movements in southern Lebanon and the conditions for a full withdrawal of the Israeli army.
The United States says it supports two key actors in Beirut: President Joseph Aoun and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. US diplomats have been working for months to pull Lebanon out of Iran's sphere of influence, disarm Hezbollah, and build a peaceful relationship between Lebanon and Israel. Aoun's visit is part of that strategy.
