Vienna, November 3, 2026

On November 3, 2026, the Vienna Higher Regional Court reduced the prison sentence for Mairon K. for the murder of Jenni Scharinger from 20 to 15 years.

The approximately two-meter-tall defendant Mairon K. spoke for himself during the appeal proceedings. In a tearful voice, he said: “Ich schäume mich dafür, was ich gemacht habe und dass ich so lange gebraucht habe, bis ich den Mut hatte, mich zu stellen.“ He said he had feared taking responsibility for years.

Mairon K. thus directly built on his confession. During the appeal hearing, the court acknowledged his appearance and the long period before he turned himself in. The confession already delivered in the original verdict was decisive in the Higher Regional Court’s decision to reduce the sentence.
