Jenni Scharinger Case: Murder Charge Filed Against Ex-Boyfriend for 2018 Killing

According to police, the young woman disappeared under "suspicious circumstances" from the shared apartment in Vienna-Brigittenau. Her family subsequently endured years of uncertainty. Despite extensive investigations, search operations, and numerous tips, it long remained unclear what had happened to the then-21-year-old law student. She was considered missing for nearly eight years.

Charge and Confession

According to investigators' information, the 21-year-old had argued with her then-partner and subsequently separated from him. The suspect apparently could not cope with this, the investigations revealed. During police interrogations, he stated that he had grabbed his victim from behind during the argument in the apartment and strangled her until she lay lifeless on the floor.

The criminal investigation against him on suspicion of deprivation of liberty had been dropped in April 2019, as at that time there was insufficient suspicion of a homicide offense. Only years later did the case gain new leads through a telltale voice message: As investigations in 2025 revealed, the suspect had "described in detail" in a chat how he would dispose of a body without leaving suspicious traces.

Turning Point Through Voice Message

Based on the contents of this chat, the man was arrested at the end of 2025. Shortly thereafter, in December of the previous year, he confessed and led investigators to the mortal remains of the young woman. The accused had initially hidden the dead woman in 2018 in a windbreak in the Großweikersdorf area of the district of Tulln.

The defense attorney for the accused, Astrid Wagner, described the act to the press as an emotional outburst and not a "planned murder." This assessment could become relevant to the legal evaluation of the case, as the prosecutor's office is nevertheless maintaining the murder charge and is pushing for placement in a forensic facility.

With the indictment, proceedings are drawing closer that have already attracted attention in Vienna for years. During the investigations, it had also become known that the accused was said to have placed the body in a windbreak — an agriculturally used structure that provided natural visual screening. In addition to the confession, the prosecutor's office is basing its indictment on forensic evidence as well as on digital evidence, in particular the chat messages from 2025.

Several police departments, the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office, and experts were involved in the search and investigation over the years. The defense has already announced that it will place its client's account at the forefront. The prosecutor's office, on the other hand, is sticking with the classification as murder and is requesting placement in a forensic-therapeutic facility.
