Apple CEO Tim Cook negotiated with EU Commissioner Henna Virkkunen in a virtual crisis meeting on Wednesday over the planned rollout of the new AI-powered version of Siri in the European Union.

The meeting was prompted by the US company's announcement at the WWDC held a few weeks ago that Siri AI would likely not be available in the EU this year due to the requirements of the Digital Markets Act. At the beginning of June at WWDC, Apple made clear who is to blame for the iPhone maker not being able to offer the "new Siri" with the release of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 in the European Union. The new system is meant to more closely resemble ChatGPT and can, among other things, access personal data such as emails, messages, and contacts to perform context-related tasks.
