Apple unveiled a new Mac Studio powered by the M5 Ultra chip, framing the desktop workstation as a platform for running AI models with hundreds of billions of parameters directly on the device.
The top configuration of the Mac Studio uses the M5 Ultra, a quad-die design built by combining two M5 Max chips via Apple's UltraFusion interconnect. According to a comparison table published alongside the announcement, the M5 Ultra delivers up to 36 CPU cores split into 12 super-cores and 24 performance-cores, paired with up to 80 GPU cores equipped with Neural Accelerators and a 32-core Neural Engine. Unified memory scales to 512 GB and memory bandwidth reaches 1.2 TB/s, figures Apple describes as enabling local execution of AI models with several hundred billion parameters.
