Apple has changed the designation of Lake Ontario in its maps app for users in the US to "Lake America," as reported by the AP news agency, citing the app change.
The renaming took place just a few days after US conglomerate Google made the same change. It was triggered by an order from President Donald Trump to rename the lake, which occurred in the context of the escalating trade dispute with Canada. Two of the largest providers of digital mapping services are thus following a political wish from Washington.
For Canadian users as well as in other markets outside the US, the app continues to display the name "Lake Ontario." Apple initially did not respond to a request for comment. The change therefore affects only the US market and leaves the international designation untouched.
