Following the collapse of trade talks between the governments in Washington and Ottawa about a week ago, the tariff dispute between Canada and the USA has escalated considerably.
Background of the Conflict
The negotiations between the governments in Washington and Ottawa had broken down about a week earlier. According to three independent sources, the conflict between the two neighboring countries has markedly intensified since then. The growing escalation is also being observed at Lake Ontario, where the tensions between the bordering states are directly felt.
Canada had already announced retaliatory tariffs on a range of U.S. goods prior to the collapse of the talks. These tariffs took effect in response to the punitive duties imposed by Donald Trump on Canadian imports. The Canadian government justified the move with the protection of domestic industries and jobs.
