Google Maps displays Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for users in the U.S., while in Canada the name "Lake Ontario" continues to appear, as the company explained with reference to the U.S. agency GNIS.

The change affects only the display within the U.S. On the Canadian version of Google Maps, the lake is still listed as "Lake Ontario." According to the information available so far, other countries outside the U.S. are also not expected to see a renaming.

Google's reasoning

Google justified the step with an alignment with official sources. A company spokesperson stated verbatim: "Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see 'Lake America,' those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario.'" As a reference system, Google cited the "Geographic Names Information System" (GNIS), the official database of geographic names of the U.S. government.
