The Round of 16 match at the FIFA World Cup between co-host Mexico and England at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Sunday is in danger of being moved up because of announced severe weather; according to Mexican media reports, a noon local time kickoff (8:00 p.m. CEST) is being discussed.

On Tuesday, Mexico's Round of 32 match against Ecuador (2-0) had already been delayed because of rain. Now new weather forecasts mean the duel with England, scheduled for Sunday evening (6:00 p.m. local time, 2:00 a.m. CEST), may also not be able to take place at its original time. Mexican media claim to have learned, citing informed sources, that kickoff at the Azteca Stadium is to take place already at noon local time (8:00 p.m. CEST, live on MagentaTV). On site, that would be the new kickoff time.

The background to the discussion is the unusual altitude of the venue: the Azteca Stadium sits more than 2,200 meters above sea level. England's coach Thomas Tuchel had therefore opted for an earlier arrival and two nights in Mexico City. The DFB also announced a postponed kickoff on Thursday evening for another match: the encounter between host USA and Argentina had originally been scheduled to kick off at 3:00 a.m. German time, but severe weather then delayed the start by one hour to 4:00 a.m. FIFA stated that the match would take place with a one-hour delay.
