England will face host nation Mexico in the World Cup round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, with head coach Thomas Tuchel warning that the high-altitude conditions and a hostile home crowd make the tie one of the toughest assignments his squad could have drawn.
England head into the knockout match from their World Cup base camp near Kansas City, which sits at roughly 280 meters above sea level, while the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City lies at more than 2,200 meters. Tuchel said the recommended protocol was to arrive either ten days before kickoff, which was not possible for England, or at the last minute, which was not permitted under tournament rules. "Das ist natürlich ein großer Nachteil", betonte Tuchel in English-language media, adding: "Die Empfehlung ist entweder zehn Tage vorher - was für uns nicht möglich ist - oder auf den letzten Drücker - was nicht erlaubt ist - zu kommen". The plan to fly in a day earlier than usual will not change the underlying physiology.
