VAR intervention after dive: Switzerland eliminated in World Cup quarterfinal by Argentina

The key scene in the 72nd minute

In the 72nd minute, Pinheiro had initially cautioned Argentina's Leandro Paredes for an alleged foul on Breel Embolo. Following a tip from the video assistant, the referee reviewed the incident on the screen and determined that Embolo had not been touched and had gone down. Pinheiro then withdrew the yellow card against Paredes and instead showed it to Embolo – who had, however, already been booked in the first half. The consequence: a second yellow and red, the first sending-off in this World Cup directly resulting from a video review.

The Swiss then played for over 50 minutes a man down. In a TV interview, he added: „Es ist eine Regel, die in einem WM-Viertelfinal nicht sein darf. Dass der Fehler des Schiedsrichters so korrigiert werden muss und wir dadurch geschwächt werden, ist für mich unverständlich."

Swiss reactions: Anger and disappointment

Captain Granit Xhaka, who was 33 years old at the time of the match, also vented his frustration. „Der Platzverweis ändert den ganzen Spielverlauf. Es schmerzt, dass wir wegen einer einzigen Entscheidung des Schiedsrichters verlieren mussten," the midfielder said in the mixed zone. The red card had been a „Gamechanger." About the second half before the sending-off, Xhaka said: „In der zweiten Halbzeit war es unser Spiel. Wir waren besser, wir hatten mehr Energie, die bessere Mentalität." Addressing the Swiss journalists who had praised the team for their performance against the favorite, he added curtly: „Es wäre besser, wenn wir von euch ein bisschen mehr Lob kriegen würden nach dem Spiel heute. Aber wir kennen das ja."

Breel Embolo, 29, was inconsolable after the incident. „Breel Embolo war verzweifelt und brach sofort in Tränen aus. Seine Mitspieler umarmten ihn," the article stated. Yakin stood up for his striker: „Er ist am Boden zerstört. Breel wurde vorher mehrmals attackiert. Ihm eine Schuld zu geben, ist absolut absurd." Xhaka agreed: „Breel ist überhaupt nicht einer, der für Schwalben bekannt ist. Er muss jeweils sehr viel einstecken." Manuel Akanji also publicly backed the attacker: „Breel ist so ein wichtiger Teil dieser Mannschaft. Er hat uns so viel gegeben, auch heute wieder. Wir stehen alle weiterhin hinter ihm."

The new VAR rule and its application

The new rule on which the intervention was based had been expanded by IFAB ahead of this World Cup. Previously, a correction of a yellow card was only possible in the case of a confusion of players within the same team. Now the VAR may also intervene when a player from the opposing team has unjustly received the caution. The FIFA had clarified at the start of the tournament that this interpretation also applies to players from the opposing team. There was already a precedent in the group stage: in the match USA against Paraguay (4:1), Dutch referee Danny Makkelie had, on a VAR recommendation, withdrawn the yellow card against US captain Tim Ream and instead cautioned Paraguay's Miguel Almirón.

The FIFA defended the procedure. To the Sportschau, the world federation explained that the refereeing team had treated the Ream/Almirón incident as a case of mistaken identity, since the yellow card had been given to the wrong player. The reinterpretation from foul to dive was permissible under FIFA's reading. Sportschau expert Lutz Wagner supported this view: „In diesem Fall greift tatsächlich der Tatbestand der Verwechslung, denn es soll nicht der falsche Spieler Gelb bekommen. In der Konsequenz war es dann auch korrekt, die Schwalbe entsprechend zu ahnden und Embolo vom Platz zu stellen."

Extra time: Argentina uses the numerical advantage

The Swiss players saw it differently. Remo Freuler called it a „Katastrophe": „Das ist ein Desaster! Ich verstehe bis jetzt nicht, wie der VAR in so einer Situation in so einem Spiel eingreifen kann." Defender Nico Elvedi demanded an explanation: „Ich verstehe einfach nicht, wie der VAR in so einem Spiel bei so einer Situation eingreifen kann, das muss die Fifa bitte noch erklären." Xhaka put it more dramatically: „Das ist eine Entscheidung, die das Spiel killt... Ich weiß nicht, was er sonst noch tun kann, aber er sollte das Spiel einfach nicht zerstören."

In extra time, Argentina used the numerical superiority with clinical efficiency. Julián Álvarez scored in the 110th minute with a long-range shot into the upper corner to make it 2:1. In stoppage time of extra time (120.+1), substitute Lautaro Martínez sealed the 3:1 final after a counterattack. Argentina, three-time world champion and defending titleholder, thus advanced to the next round as a fortunate winner for the third consecutive time in this knockout phase – after a 3:2 against Egypt with a winning goal in the 90.+2 and a 3:2 against Cape Verde with an own goal in the 111th minute.

Lionel Messi, who did not score in this match – his first goalless game at this World Cup – nonetheless experienced a historic evening. In his hometown of Cutral Có, a 26-meter-high Messi statue had been unveiled at the start of the World Cup. The Argentine players celebrated the victory with the battle cry „Für die Malvinas (Spitzname der Falklandinseln), für Diego und für Leos letzten (Titel).
