A devastating fire tore through a girls' boarding school dormitory in Nakuru County, Kenya, in the early hours of Thursday, killing at least 16 students and injuring dozens more.
The Incident
The blaze broke out around 1 a.m. in the dormitory of the school, located in the Rift Valley region, according to regional police representatives. The Kenyan Red Cross said the fire was reported to them at approximately 4:30 a.m.
Local media, citing a police officer at the scene, reported that 16 people died and 74 were injured. Reuters, also citing police sources, said the death toll could be as high as 15 students. Most of the victims were female students.
