In an escalation of violence at a prison in the coastal city of Negombo, north of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, at least 25 people were killed and around 100 others injured.

As two police representatives and a hospital employee told the Reuters news agency today, the deadly clashes occurred at a detention facility in Negombo, approximately 35 kilometers north of Colombo. According to police sources, security forces continued to search the prison grounds for victims in order to determine the exact number of dead and injured.

The day before, convicted prisoners at the prison north of the capital, Colombo, had already clashed with individuals in custody. Two groups of inmates had clashed yesterday at a detention facility in the coastal city of Negombo, according to reports. This situation apparently escalated with fatal consequences.
