At least 50 people were killed and more than 70 injured when a munitions depot exploded on Sunday around midday local time in Namhkam, a town in Myanmar's northeastern Shan region.
The blast caused widespread destruction, damaging numerous residential houses in the surrounding area, according to local media reports. Rescue workers rushed to the scene to search for people buried under the rubble, while the local hospital reported an acute shortage of blood reserves needed to treat the wounded.
The Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic armed group active in the region, confirmed that the munitions depot was in their possession. In a statement, the group said the affected depot contained commercial-grade explosives intended for use in a quarry it operated.
