UN Organizations Fear More Than 500 Dead in Boat Disasters off Myanmar

Background: Persecution of the Rohingya in Myanmar

Contact with the first boat, carrying around 250 people, was lost shortly after it departed from Myanmar at the end of June. It is assumed that both ships sank in rough seas. A second ship with approximately 280 passengers is believed to have been wrecked on July 8.

The two ships had departed at the end of June from the coast of Rakhine State. Rakhine is the region of Myanmar from which most Rohingya originate and where persecution by the military as well as tensions with the Buddhist majority population are particularly severe.

Escape Routes and Destination Countries

The UN organizations have been warning for years about the deadly risks of these crossings. The routes usually lead across the Bay of Bengal or the Andaman Sea toward Malaysia, Indonesia, or Thailand. Many boats are overloaded, unseaworthy, and travel without adequate navigation equipment.

Survivors of such journeys are frequently held in detention facilities or refugee camps in the destination countries. In Bangladesh, where hundreds of thousands of Rohingya already live in camps around Cox's Bazar, the situation had dramatically escalated after the renewed flare-up of violence in Rakhine from 2017 onward.

Reactions and Demands

The IOM and UNHCR emphasized that the exact circumstances and casualty figures still need to be verified. The report was broadcast on July 16, 2026, on the Deutschlandfunk program and is based on communications from the UN organizations in Bangkok.

In light of the disaster, international aid organizations are once again demanding better protection for the Rohingya in Myanmar as well as safe and regular escape routes out of the region. Without a fundamental improvement in living conditions in the country of origin, further perilous crossings are to be expected.
