Following two boat disasters off the coast of Myanmar, the UN organizations IOM and UNHCR fear more than 500 dead, most of them members of the Muslim Rohingya minority.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR reported that more than 500 people may have died in two recent ship disasters off Myanmar. "Obwohl die Vorfälle und Opferzahlen noch offiziell bestätigt werden müssen, sind UNHCR und IOM zutiefst besorgt über den möglicherweise verheerenden Verlust von Menschenleben", the organizations stated.
According to the information, those on board were predominantly members of the Muslim Rohingya minority. The Rohingya are oppressed and persecuted in Myanmar, which is why members of the minority, in search of better living conditions, repeatedly embark on dangerous sea voyages aboard unseaworthy vessels. These journeys are often operated by smuggling networks.
