Madrid, 11 July 2026
The Spanish top club Atlético Madrid has signed Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Lisbon, paying around 40 million euros in transfer fees.
Career path across five countries
Atlético Madrid has officially confirmed the signing of Morten Hjulmand. "The Spanish top club is putting around 40 million euros on the table for the 27-year-old," the statement said. This makes Hjulmand the most expensive defensive signing in the club's history. The defensive midfielder signed a contract with the Colchoneros until 30 June 2031.
For Hjulmand, the Rojiblancos are the fifth club in his fifth country and the second stop in one of the top five leagues. The 27-cap international was trained at FC Copenhagen, which he left in 2018 to join Admira Wacker. "When Morten Hjulmand moved from the FC Copenhagen academy to Admira in the summer of 2018, no one had any idea what path the young professional would one day take," the club wrote in its statement. "In the Südstadt, the then young professional developed into a key player."
