According to a media report, car production at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm is to end in 2034 because the Volkswagen Group sees no economically viable capacity allocation for the site for the 2030s.
According to the report, the Neckarsulm site is one of four Volkswagen Group plants whose future is currently uncertain. In addition to the Audi plant in Neckarsulm, the VW plants in Emden, Hanover, and Zwickau are affected. For all four sites, according to Group CEO Oliver Blume, there is still „keine wettbewerbsfähige Belegung für die 2030er Jahre“. The quote comes from the report and is reproduced verbatim.
Volkswagen employs several tens of thousands of workers at the four named sites, according to Group figures. A loss of a site would therefore have immediate consequences for employees, suppliers, and the respective regions. Economic researchers see the transformation toward electric mobility and intensified competition from Chinese manufacturers as the main drivers of consolidation. Negotiations with employee representatives about future capacity allocations are already underway, according to the Group.
