Vienna, 1 July 2026
A reduced value-added tax rate of 4.9 percent on selected staple foods, down from 10 percent, took effect in Austria on 1 July, with independent calculations showing savings of only a few euros per month for typical families.
The Austrian government's reduction of VAT on everyday food items came into force on Tuesday. The rate on a defined basket of staple products was lowered from 10 percent to 4.9 percent, a cut that the federal government in Vienna promoted as meaningful relief for households facing sustained cost-of-living pressures.
