Vienna, 1 July 2026

On 1 July 2026, the federal government of ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS lowers the value-added tax on certain basic foodstuffs from ten to 4.9 percent; critics such as the FPÖ and Gabriel Felbermayr see only a minor relief for consumers.

What the Reduction Covers

The reduction applies to selected basic foodstuffs. These include fresh milk, yogurt, butter, eggs, fresh and frozen vegetables, certain types of fruit, rice, wheat flour, semolina, uncooked and unfilled pasta, bread, and table salt. All of these products are now subject to a tax rate of 4.9 percent instead of the previous ten percent.

For bread products, however, the preferential rate is tied to a condition: under the legal regulation, the fat and sugar content in the dry matter must not exceed five percent each in order for the reduced rate to apply. As a result, many classic rolls and filled baked goods fall outside the reduction.
