Vienna, 17 August 2026
Klaus Haslinger of Geosphere Austria has described the past twelve months in Austria as the driest in the entire history of measurements, after the SPEI index dropped below minus 4 in July 2026.
The Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) measures the climatic water balance over longer periods, taking into account both precipitation and evaporation. When the index falls significantly below zero, it indicates a pronounced drought. According to Haslinger, the value for the twelve months up to July 2026 was below minus 4, which he described as unprecedented in the entire history of measurements: „Das ist beispiellos in der gesamten Messgeschichte und stellt damit auch bisherige Extremjahre in den Schatten."
